"You must be freezing"
These are the first words L said to me in a bus shelter in small town North Dakota. My first experience of negative 30 degrees, and what it really entails. L showed me the bus shelter where the unhoused people gather to keep warm, how to layer up to survive the winter, why are down jackets better than woolen coats – fragments of American Midwest existence.
